Grand Pianos of the Golden Age

Grand pianos from the golden age of 1890 till today...

... were ever more rarely seen in private households, because the amount of solid upright pianos was competing with them. This was ultimately the consequence of shrinking living space even of the wealthier city families, and, above all, of significantly higher costs for a grand piano at the turn of the century. Classical parlor grands of 1900 were still 2 meters long, but then, basically after the 1920s, the manufacturers tried to acquire customers as well with baby grands of 1.40 m in length. But only few manufacturers managed to succeed with this smaller shape, esp. with regard to sound quality.

And yet: those who can provide the space for a grand piano should consider that, because nice grand pianos merge playability, looks and sound potential in a way that is always superior to an upright piano.

Length: 1,80 m

Finding an Ibach grand piano with a serial number around or below 10000 is very very hard. Finding an Ibach artcase grand piano of this era is even harder. So this one here really is a treasure. It got finished Sep 1st, 1884 in Barmen (Germany) and delivered to Ibach Cologne. The Ibach factory in Cologne was specialised in artcase pianos. In 1885 the piano got sold to a rich family in Cologne. We actually bought this piano right from the house it got first delivered to in 1885. Incredible. The piano is untouched, still playing. It requires a restoration to be as beautiful as it had been in 1884.
