Upright Pianos of the Golden Age

Pianos from the golden age from 1890 to 1945...

... offer mostly a wonderful union of artistically designed case and characterful sound pattern. The biggest number of piano construction companies and highly sophisticated instruments was found worldwide during this period. The most important innovations in piano making - especially by Steinway & Sons in the USA - were imported into the series production especially of the major manufacturers.

In the early 20th century, this fertile piano market collapsed, mainly affecting a lot of smaller European manufacturers, because important export markets like the USA, Eastern Europe and Asia lowered their customs barriers while companies like Yamaha introduced a very large number of instruments to the important American market.

Even though instruments from this period can be as much as 100 years old, they have a high economic and musical value if they are well preserved or authentically restored.

The piano is technically well preserved, except for a crack in the soundboard, and it is fully playable. Its looks suffered from a lot of sunshine and wear. Still it looks nice and can readily be polished with shellac. It has a full warm sound and a lot of dynamic potential.

Hoepfner's pianoforte factory in Berlin built high-quality small pianos of this shape, primarily throughout the 1920s. The piano is non-restored, still playing acceptable.
